08/19/08 - Scalloping in St. Joseph Bay

We are now more than half way through the scallop season and with mixed results. Some people are limiting out each day and others are coming in with a disappointing handful. Results are based on scallop location. Don't just go around Black's Island. Try around the fire tower in the Cape's buffer zone; Pig's Island about 200' offshore; west side of the Cape all the way from Pig's Island to the bay side cottages [about 5 miles] in the state park about 200-300' off shore. If you don't find any scallops in the 1st 15-20 minutes move to another spot. Normally when you find scallops they are in groups. Good luck; they are a real delicacy.

Reply Posted: 08/23/08 Can you suggest a few of your favorite ways to prepare them once I am ready to cook our catch? Thanks for your help.

Reply Posted: 08/24/08 I have two favorites. First, my wife makes a supurb Coquilles St.-Jacques. It is heavy but we love it as part of a fish dinner or appetizer. Second, saute scallops with butter/oil, garlic and onions. Maybe add red pepper flakes and parsley over pasta. Don't over cook the scallops as they will be tough; no more than 2 minutes or less. Enjoy and let me know how they turn out.
